Giving students the power of choice over what they read and then putting that reading at the center of your curriculum will have a remarkable effect on your classroom. Classrooms fueled by kid-energy are magic places. Amazing transformations happen, and huge gains in state test scores are just the tip of the iceberg. Insist that your students demonstrate their competence at their highest independent reading level and then challenge them to read for an hour a day from books they can read and want to read without any help. Talk with them about what they are reading. Listen to their independent problem-solving as they read, looking for the logic behind their errors. Tailor your curriculum to the needs and passions of the students you have right now. This doesn't mean abandoning your core curriculum, but it does mean using the core curriculum to teach kids how to find meaning in books in order to help them find meaning in life.
